Okay, you have probably been told that you look too fat, or your doctor has told you to lose weight or you simply have decided to pay extra attention to your health. Whatever the reason is, eating healthy is definitely a must for whoever wants to have a healthy life style or lose weight. You are not alone! Today, thousands of people make the decision to lose weight and start eating better on a daily basis. Once this decision has been made, a series of question follows. Questions such as what healthy eating plan should I follow? Is being a vegetarian the way out? Should I go on juice diet? How do I eat healthy with Nigerian food?

Well, in this article, I’m going to be revealing the things to look out for before you choose a healthy eating plan. Basically an healthy eating plan should be able to give your body the required daily nutrients while staying within the daily calorie goal. Healthy eating is never about strict dietary limitations, becoming and staying unrealistically thin or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather it should improve your outlook and mental health, give you more energy and do a whole lot in stabilizing your mood. In fact, there is a whole lot to consider before choosing a diet plan and I will advise you to read this article. Simply put, an healthy eating plan:

  1. Places high importance on the intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat – free/ low fat dairy products
  2. Controls portion sizes
  3. Includes lean meats, beans, eggs, fish and nuts
  4. Reduces or limits saturated and trans fat, sodium and added sugars.

In addition to the tips listed above, a good healthy eating plan should ensure you steer clear of processed foods and should include healthy snacks (to complete the eat five times daily requirement). If this is done well, you will also improve digestion and boost your immune system.

 

Although, i know some dieticians would recommend that you have to give up some of your favorite foods in order to achieve your health or weight loss goals, the truth is you really don’t have to. You can and should still be able to eat your favorite foods if you properly calculate your daily carb and calorie intake. In fact, your diet plan should expand your culinary horizons so that you can enjoy exciting new foods and recipes that are nourishing, colorful and packed with vibrant flavours.

Furthermore, it is important to note that the time you eat greatly affects your health. Always remember to never skip breakfast as it helps to kick off your metabolism just as eating small foods more frequently is better than taking large meals at once (in order to keep your energy up). Late night eating too should be greatly discouraged. It is generally advised that you eat five hours before you sleep at night meaning you have to eat dinner early so that you can fast for 14 – 16 hours before breakfast the next morning. Studies reveal that this can help regulate weight.

 

Staying healthy by choosing a good healthy eating plan will surely reap you great benefits in the long run, just remember not to overdo it and carefully choose a diet plan that you know you can actually stick to.
